Research For/By Design: Part IV
Background
This post will cover part 4 out of 5 parts of this project. On this part, my team was responsible for creating a fully interactive prototype and a final presentation to answer the following questions.
- What topic/problem is the prototype intended to address?
- Why do you feel your prototype/solution is relevant and useful?
- Who is your primary user, and how does the prototype address their specific needs?
- How did you create your prototype?
- What specific feedback are you looking for, if any?
Tools
The tools used in this project were:
- Mural
- Figma
Ideation/Brainstorming Workshop Reflection
Our team started reflecting on the workshop that we ran on the previous part of this project. Based on what ideas we wanted to work on, we finalized to work on the idea of QR scan stickers. To summarize, this will be a mobile application where an individual can donate money to a homeless individual via scanning a QR code.

Product Pivot
As my team started to discuss further on this idea, we thought the best solution is to be able to donate, not through a QR Code. However, being able to connect to the homeless person’s smartphone. So after discussions and having a voting session, we have decided to pivot the interaction design of donating.
User Flow
After discussing what the user will do to interact, we needed to know how the overall interaction and user flow should be. Down below, we created the user flow of what we can deliver as a minimal viable product (MVP). For this iteration of the prototype, we only wanted to focus on the main flow because we see that there can be many edge case designs we need to consider and other complications such as a verification process.

Style Guide
To better guide us as we design our prototype, we have created a style guide to ensure that it can stay consistent throughout the application. Looking down below, we have created the following
- Typography
- Primary color palettes
- Common Elements (Buttons)
- Grids and Layout of the iPhone 11

Final Prototype
After being able to gather everything, now it was time to start working on the final prototype. Looking below, we have created our final prototype based on the problem we are solving and leveraging the style guide that has been created.

What would I have done differently?
If I had more time, I would have liked to do the following.
- Being able to create the interaction of the secondary persona and connect it with the interaction of the secondary persona.
- Survey to understand better what forms of interactions the user would prefer? Would they prefer to use a QR code interaction or the current flow by connecting through the phone?
- Conduct other types of surveys such as understanding how trustworthy do people perceive this app to be? Also, understanding if this app will solve Carla’s problem?
Next Steps
Two next steps for me and my team are.
- Creating the interaction on the secondary persona perspective
- Conduct primary research for results on prototype and iterate based on that
Self Reflection
Working on this prototype/project helped me realize that people in need of help need a helping hand to achieve their personal goals and need a little bit of money to do so. However, while working on the app, I realize a few challenges I can foresee happening, such as verifying whether an individual is homeless. This is something I would also be interested in exploring as well.
